Thank you for your interest in volunteering with OMDR! The resources on this site are intended for volunteers who have already attended our volunteer trainings. Because most of our work requires a thorough understanding of the context we're working in and a readiness to commit to long-term work, we request that all volunteers interested in visitations to people inside Otay Mesa Detention Center, transporting and/or housing recently-released people, staffing our hotline, coordinating letter-writing, or supporting with administrative tasks first come to a training. These trainings are held approximately every six weeks in San Diego. To be notified about the next one, please email us or follow our Facebook or Instagram.
If you are looking for a short-term commitment, we invite you to write letters to people inside. The support you offer is most effective when it's ongoing, so if you're prepared to maintain an ongoing written relationship, this is a good role for you! You can talk to us about letter writing at the fantastic Tianguis de la Raza, held the last Sunday of every month at the Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park (follow their Instagram for more info). If you cannot attend the Tianguis, please email us and we will share the information you'll need to get started.
If you have other ways you would like to support, we're open to your thoughtful, humanity-honoring suggestions. Please feel free to email us.
